She remembers them walking this way, so in love; but, as she’s sadly learned, meaningful feelings can be attached to meaningless relationships. For she meant nothing to him, and only the intensity of her own desire ever made her think he did.

It’s sad that no one knows that he at one time protected the whole world from invasion; but real heroes, he’s realized, rarely get the attention they deserve. At any rate, he would not have liked the attention had he received it: the one type of invader he can’t deal with at all are those who invade his own space.
She broke my heart when we were young, but it wasn’t like I was using it that often. For years I planned a revenge that involved getting her to fall in love with me so I could reject her, but it turned out to be harder to get someone who was indifferent to me to fall in love with me than I imagined.
Life is complicated, and friendship even more so: we ask for honesty from our friends, but also expect kindness and loyalty, which can be at variance with honesty. When, however, we accept the complexities and messiness of life and human relations, we realize that even the most honest of our friends can only give one piece of our own puzzles — an essential, vital piece, but still only one.
Perhaps we need to see, and know, the high, uncounted cost of all our imagery. For much we think perfection is not gift, but theft.

My brother and I both remembered being so quarrelsome growing up that “we couldn’t even get our pronouns to agree.” She laughed.
Things are what they are, but these same things can also carry meaning beyond their mere physical reality; this empty building once was several people’s home, but now seems to represent mortality itself as it sits empty under the unforgiving sun. I know my ancestors now, mostly, only as names, and like this house their stories seem to have died with them, without a lasting record I can read now to try to bring them back to life.
