mailbox

aside a sunny stretch of somewhere

patient ponders prepared for most-weather
designed for in and by past times
juncture of a different type of social network

opened by all age hands and all mood hearts
expectancy, grief, news of great joy
the war is over and the baby’s come
the check’s arrived and the heart’s stopped beating
i will love you always and for now goodbye —

publisher’s clearinghouse and columbia record club
s&h green stamps and new store opening
winter scene cards in december and bad jokes on birthdays

who remembers what lifted hearts or the hearts themselves
fall foliage bedecked and house not-noticed
new owners new cars new dogs new hands
human spectrum inhered from felt mail walking
how lives craft messages and messages change lives

young woman smart watch manicured
removes two party donation requests and a gas bill
and closes the door on the ghosts of her ancestors

and throws the donation requests away
