Mercy

We all start weak,
And end up weak, as well –
We think we’re strong:
Beyond all reach, or tell —

But still comes pain,
It knows no boundaries;
The proudest lion
Humbled by disease

It is our shared
And imminent condition;
Each earthly paradise
Admixed with much perdition

But still, the healers
Touch where they can reach:
And mercy soothes
Where judgment fails to teach

It is the light,
It is the common bond;
It’s mercy’s face
That points to some
Beyond
