the tangled ones

i asked the tangled ones to say
why their lives had turned out this way;
they laughed at my misguided “why”
then spread their wings and turned to fly

but all they did was stand apace
and scan the township hard and long;
the tangled ones, still held in place
by threads so fine, but still
too strong
