A Little Girl’s Smile

I will attempt to put in words,
Although I’ve not the art —
Just what the smile of a little girl
Does to this old man’s heart

It melts away all frostiness,
Lights up the darkest day:
And I would gladly give up life
To help her on her way

To see her become everything
She ever wants to be;
To reach her full potential
And adorn posterity

But we live in reality
We hear it, time again —
And girls have many just reasons
To be afraid of men

I have three grown stepdaughters
As teens I came to know;
I have no granddaughters as yet
To love and to watch grow

So, little girl who smiled at someone
That she’d never met:
You’ve helped someone you’ll never know
But who’ll never
