The Man Who Shows Up

The man who shows up
Brings his manifest imperfections
For all to see.
He cannot pose
As having all the answers,
For presence makes him
Accountable.

The man who shows up
Cannot be idolized, or lionized,
Because reality has a smell.
You can’t really photoshop
An odor —
Even in your mind.

The man who shows up
Might be a carnival barker one day
And a dark cloud the next:
It turns out
He has moods, too.

The man who shows up
Grinds away,
Unfashionably,
Often trying to do right today,
What he didn’t do so well
Yesterday.

But the man who disappears —
He gets the biggest love,
For he can be idolized,
Has all the answers,
Can be a seeming ‘rock’
With a perfect hint of cologne,
Because he’s never there long enough
For the cracks to show.

So we probably shouldn’t wonder
Why the men who show up

Have all disappeared

A Universe

There, they scatter out like stars
In twos and threes, as light gives way to light;
In search of fuel – of energy –
From smile-turns and glances back. The site

Is spinning: orbits soon are formed,
And constellations set, in glowing mien:
A universe: desire and release —
To laugh, to see, and finally to

Be seen

Within the sphere…

Within the sphere that we can touch there is
The outline of illusory control;
In check marks, or in answers to the quiz,
The thrill of power resonates. The soul

Is born to yearning, stretching; not to harm,
But to increase our aptitude, until
We go beyond what eye can see, or arm
Can compass in, to that which kindles will.

For we would always have what we will have:
Perimeters and boundaries ignored,
The things or friends or gossip that we grab
That signify us greedy, vain, or bored —

And yet, within arm’s reach, we miss, I fear,
That all we’d ever needed was right here.

Awakening

It can happen anytime
At any age, in any place —
A sudden, sharp awakening,
Much more than just a change of pace

It comes as gentle as a breeze,
Or sudden as a squall,
And suddenly, adventure doesn’t
Seem that strange at all.

A winter night, a summer day,
A whole new life in instant spent —
But once you find awakening
You’ll wonder where the rest of your life

Went
