Reading Light

I cannot sleep, there is no rest for me.
I struggle vainly to stave off the night –
I rise and go where I can sit and think
And seek the solace of my reading light.

For many are the pages in my thoughts,
And myriad the worries of my shelves:
But there, beside the steady gleaming light
If find the single self inside my selves.

For nothing reads as a poorly as a brain
That’s separated from itself and sleep;
To jump around in pools of consciousness,
Confused and with strange company to keep

But there’s a friend for me, and faithfully,
A solace in my old, familiar chair —
And night must take its dinner somewhere else;
I checked, and still
My reading light
Is there

Defiance

In, oh, about two hours time
Another piece will post:
Because I couldn’t sleep at all
I’ve written more than most

Who have more sense than just to sit
And churn these dang things out
Without so much as giving thought
To what they’re all about

But now I stop and think. I guess
The reason that I write
Is that although I could not sleep
I can defy
The night

Clambering

At night I often clamber.
It’s just a thing I do;
I climb up towards the stars until
My clambering is through

Perhaps it’s just insomnia,
A sleep-inducing chore;
Still, doesn’t anybody
Ever clamber anymore?

Trading Mornings

At two, he didn’t want to go to bed;
For sleep meant missing out on many things

By eight, the day was pounded in his head:
But longed for magic only late night brings

At eighteen, all the night had opened up;
But morning held him long in her embrace

And now, he falls, but cannot stay, asleep;
The endless tired hours his soul erase

The boy who traded morning for night’s kiss
Now finds both lovers gone
Like morning
Mist

Like Reeds

If nights brought me sleep
My mind might not be melting

If dark brought on rest
I might not self-destruct

If dreams were my friends
I’d close my eyes in wonder

But I, for another night
Will stir like reeds in the wind

Sleep, My Friend

And so at last, the night has brought its food –
An offering of stars upon a plate;
The moon is watching, and might think it rude
If you should choose not to participate

So sleep, my friend, let clouds and pillows mix;
Let tired mind and muscle have their ease –
It’s time for dreams to do their magic tricks;
To lift you out, upon the scented breeze

Remember not the troubles of the day
And sleep, my friend, just sleep the night away

Insomniata

Why DO I write so frickin’ much?
I CANnot say, I cannot say
Why WON’T the words leave me alone?
There HAS to be a better way

To TURN this madness into fire,
TURN the fire into verse;
TURN my mind off for a while,
LET sleep to my spirit nurse

WHY am I so sleep-bedraggled
WHEN I do not sleep at all?
WILL this writing soon demise me,
ROBbing Peter
TO pay Paul?

Night Musing

Cannot Sleep

It’s the middle of night

Funny how the night doesn’t seem to have sides
Only a middle

There used to be some soap opera…
“The Edge of Night”
So, there is that

Why am I awake?
I’m frequently asleep at work
I have this all backwards

I wonder if I could claim jet lag
From driving a 1982 Dodge Omni?
That car can’t even do the speed limit

If you dropped it out of a plane

What was that plane my dad used to fly?
Yeah, that’s right, a “Goony-Bird”
It was a transport plane, I think

The airshow here last week was sure loud
Like when I went to see that
Awful Journey concert

We classical music types should know our limits

Speaking of limits, I wonder
Would reviewing my advance Calculus textbook
Help me get to sleep?

I remember that
For every Delta there is an Epsilon
Except
There’s no Epsilon Airlines

That’s okay, their flight schedule
Would probably be Greek to me
And I’d be standing there
Alone in the airport, thinking

It’s the middle of the night
