Sing a Song of Summertime

Sing a song of summertime,
Do it while the day’s still young –
Run down to the riverside,
Celebrate with eyes and tongue

  Read the meaning on the wind,
  Catch the spirit in the day:
  Sing a song of summertime,
  Just get up, and break away.

Joy is found where simple is,
Love is made of word and deed;
Hope keeps walking in the dark,
Friendship comforts those in need

  Catch the time-bird as it flies,
  Read the branches as they sway:
  Sing a song of summertime,
  Throw monotony away.

Does the summer owe you joy?
Are your passions sharp and swift?
Do you work when all you need
Is available as gift?

  Read your favorite books again,
  Catch the words, it’s child’s play:
  Sing a song of summertime,
  Break your bonds, and break
  Away

The Old Days Cannot Hold You

The old days cannot hold you anymore.
Walls once thought so forbidding disappear;
Within the old life’s empty, cracked veneer
Now freedom beckons through the waiting door

If you keep your eyes open, you will know:
This place has never meant security.
There’s more to you than simple pliancy;
Just take a breath
And make your choice
And go

Out on the Water

She soaks up stress from all around,
A type of psychic blotter —
Then yearns for freedom and release:
To sail out on the water.

With wind and cirrus as her friends,
To be the ocean’s daughter:
And know the innocence of truth
She finds out on the water.

For all that’s gone away in life –
For losses have been mounting –
To be where there are no demands
And nothing that needs counting —

The call she answers from her soul
She’s been too long dismissing:
To be out on the water and
To find what she’s
Been missing

She Will Not Wear

She’s heard too many lectures
In this mental one-horse town;
She will not wear the chains
Professors forge to keep her down

She won’t be told what she should take
Nor what all she should give;
The way to fly is hers to choose —
It is her life
To live

Teachers

Students

Teachers
Teach the truth as you see it

Be careful of your facts

But also
Give your real opinions
Carefully identifying them as such

Share your real passions

Be your real self

Pass the spark on
As it was passed to you

Teachers
Go now
And make a better world possible

Oh, and one other thing —

Administrators
Please
Get out of the Teachers’ way

Driving Space

Calling from the distant mountains
Out of time and mood and place;
Where the worth needs no accountants,
Filled with trust, and driving space

Don’t believe the idle chatter;
Let the rumor-mongers go —
Never mind what doesn’t matter,
Drive past where you’re loth to go

Falling down among the shadows
There where summer lies in state,
There are voices in the meadows
Telling you you’re doing great

Driving space and bending passion –
This, the day, and now, the need:
Don’t be slaves to crowds or fashion,
Life is yours, you have been
Freed

She Danced Out On A Summer Day

She danced out on a summer day
As though alone and unconcerned
With anybody else at all;
She moved for love of motion

The sky was blue, the clouds were few,
The sun looked on delighted:
The music moved her, every part,
Her body was ignited

And as she spun and whirled and turned
The earth was laughing tears of joy;
For it had little notion

That one like her, a child of earth,
Had kept so much of life, of birth;
Who knew the music of the spheres
It’s love-embracing potion:

And how the soul’s invited
To dance whenever dancing’s good,
And keep your boy- or your girl-hood

Real or Unreal?

It might now seem unreal, but that’s because
We live within a world of imagery;
So much we’ve never tasted, felt or smelled
We think we know from things we hap to see

We’re lief to say we know what’s false from true;
The photoshopped from what with life is full —
That perfect animals like this exist
Or perfect photos, seems impossible

And yet, this photo, which I lately bought
Is not, I think, unreal, but just got
Caught
