The moment is a perfect one
Of wildness and rapture;
But some things are more beautiful
Than I have words
To capture

Of what’s to come she can’t be sure,
But she’s seen love and been alone —
The heart that knows the truth is pure,
And has a beauty all
Its own
It’s cheating when you wear a sundress;
It’s not really fair;
I normally have some control
And don’t just stand and stare —
I know we’re at the beach, and so
It’s something women wear –
But, wow, you look good in a sundress.
Now I’ve said it.
There.
So many blast their music loud,
But will not put their flowers in the window;
They show their anger to the world,
But act as though their kindness was too fragile to be shared
But some we find who are not so,
What beauty they can share, they do it, always;
And add such colors to our world
As help us go to places we would ne’er before have dared
I’ve sought out beauty all my life
In words and deeds and music:
But many, gifted with its grace,
Go on to just abuse it
But then there’s you, my friend. I see
You take it on, entire —
And turn it into kindness; so
To take
Your beauty
Higher

Sometimes, what I write’s fiction, and
Sometimes, what I write’s fact:
Right now, I think, I’d like to keep it real —
I married someone beautiful,
That’s something I am not:
I think I got the good end
Of the deal

So many lives cut short for causes
No one can recall –
So many, rallied to the trumpets,
Gone beneath the pall –
So many, barely risen, when
It came their time to fall –
But men die in their seasons;
And wars do not need reasons
But many spend their mortal days
In pastimes much more meek –
Pursuing beauty as they can,
Engaging in technique –
In pottery or carpentry
Or making silk batik –
For beauty born in season
Is its own kind of reason;
And far beyond war’s measure
Is just one moment’s
Pleasure
Silver and clear-green
Luxury
Shy in high estate
She said:
“Write me a poem.
Make it short and have it rhyme.”
She wishes she felt beautiful,
But doesn’t
Most the time
It strange: she’s very lovely,
Very smart, and quick and kind;
But thinks she should be more.
I think she is
Out of
Her mind
