So many shades of flavor,
Different ways they can combine –

Metal built and long twisted
Ladders out of safety and indolence
Stretching towards life-sustaining substance
To help those that would grow and to
Escape the flames
Always overhead
tell me the truth and help me see
the world somewhere outside of me
tell me the lies that make you smile
and soothe me – for a little while –
tell me a tale that just sounds right
that gets me through another night —
just tell me how and where and when
this emptiness fills up
again
Outside the valley, no one knows
Just how it feels when you
No longer feel —
For what are facts and family
When friends and fortunes seem
No longer real?
We move as we are moved, and so
Without emotion, life
Is broken will —
Within the valley, trapped inside
The hopeless stillness of
The heart
Gone still
We moved, because
We need more space –
We’ve plenty now
Around this place
The neighbors, though
Are such a pain —
And I could do
With much less
Rain
It’s hard to see your future
While your running from your past;
It’s hard to yearn for permanence
When things weren’t meant to last
It’s hard to see the stars, when we
Are trapped inside a bar —
And it’s hard to forgive yourself
For being who
You are
the world creeps in around each hedge and border
to see what sort of animal they’ll find —
a lonely deer that’s posing as a lion,
a trembling heart that’s posing as
a mind
There’s so much that we never hear
Or say, and so we guess —
That question you’re not asking me?
Of course, the answer’s yes
But ‘yes’ is, well, a real world thing:
It tends to up and go —
And leaves a negativity:
The ‘no’ that we all know
But in the secret shadows, we
May yet, at last confess
That thing that only whispers yield
The plaintiff, simple
‘Yes’
