Connected still by roots, although
We feel ourselves excessively ambulatory,
We live tied to that which gives us life,
Sacred everywhere at all times, and nowhere today,
We of the earth, by the earth, on the earth.

Children play in dirt, as though remembering their
Original inheritance; in the end, we return to the earth,
From whose particles we were formed,
On whose surface all we have closely known resides,
And to whom we owe something like allegiance.

Moving, yet seemingly still to us,
The earth is both beyond our understanding
And so simple we take it for granted;
But when the earth leaves our heart,
Our hearts have truly

Left the earth
