the phantom in the water

she follows me in dreams, she never
leaves me for a moment –
the phantom in the water, past
the point of small reward,
is untoward
in where she leads my secret thoughts —

she sings to me at night, forever
unrest she will foment –
the phantom in the water, last
to really know the tune,
and far too soon
the blood stops in my ears in clots —

and i might row until my arms give out,
but still she waits below the surface there,
it’s hardly fair,
but dreams have brought me here,
and left me little doubt —

the phantom in the water
will not ever let me rest,
i can attest
that i am meant to be
forever in this swamp
