Sara’s Winter Memory

she walked outside and smelled
woodsmoke of many chimneys

he was
so young then, they both were –

the day was cold, but
she felt her face flush,
her heart beating –
almost as though
she had never actually had a heart
before that moment

and mixed with the woodsmoke was
his after-shave which
was not too strong, but which
took her mind places
her body wanted desperately
to follow

she commented on
the slipperiness of
the snow-covered sidewalk
and he smiled

and her mind and her body

more-or-less left the planet
