Distant Cities

I dreamed of distant cities
At nine years old or so,
And drew with colored pencils
The places I would go

For wondrous in excitement
I found the urban sprawl;
We’d travel through in summertime,
Though every year, in fall

We’d be back in our quiet town
Just miles from the beach;
And lights and shows and symphonies
Were just beyond my reach

But I would get there one day, for
I planned to do it all;
I’d reach those distant cities, for
I’d often heard them call

We smile at a child’s dreams,
But we should understand;
Without them, neither girl nor boy
Could be woman or man

That reaches for that something more,
That chases that bright star —
Those things we loved since childhood,
That make us
Who
We are
