“Ruff”

Toy Story

What was your favorite plaything as a child? Do you see any connection between your life now, and your favorite childhood toy?

Because I’m terrified of dogs
My mother used her head:
She got me a stuffed dog, so I
Could overcome my dread

I called him “Ruff” and he was fierce
No enemies came near;
I knew that just one look at him
They’d all run off, in fear

It’s strange: the thing I feared, I loved –
Both feelings there supplied:
Somehow, I slept more soundly
With a monster by my side

I lost him one day on a trip
My safety fell apart:
I had a taste of what grief is,
A child’s broken heart

I’m still afraid of dogs, it’s true;
And know, as child and dad
The tears that come when we lose friends
We’ve loved
With all
We had
