He wanted her, but
She said, “no way”
This isn’t a great story
You’ve told your truth, she said, now I’ll tell mine:
I’m not attracted to you in “that way”.
You’ve put it out there, there’s no harm in that –
But please, don’t do it after now, today —
I felt myself not quite able to breathe,
But summoned up what “good grace” I could find,
And told her that I heard, and understood,
And tried to shift from hopeful to resigned
But I despised myself for what I’d said.
What must I be to be rejected so?
I didn’t blame her, she just spoke the truth;
But when you’re no one
You should, really,
Know
He asked her if she’d marry him
And she said, “sorry, no –”
The sun went down upon the beach
And he stood up to go
For this is love: it is the leap
With no hope of protection —
And sunset rainbows lovely are,
But cannot change
Rejection
A ready smile on your face,
A kind look in your eyes;
A glowing radiance displayed
Without shield or disguise
A friend to all and anyone,
Wherever she might be —
And open heart of endless love,
But not for me
So what now, of betrayal?
When your ‘friends’ leave you behind
For others, or because they think
They’re too good for your kind.
You open up yourself to those
Who look, and then reject you,
But don’t stop there; they then go on
To gather, and subject you
To gossip on your many faults,
As all inside you reels;
To be betrayed by those you trust —
Do you know how this feels?

You say you don’t deserve me, and
That I deserve much more:
But yet it’s only you I’ve ever wanted.
And so it is your fault, but it is
Me that’s out the door.
I must admit it – for all of your vaunted
Honesty, I have to say, that I am not convinced.
Except for one thing:
That you don’t want me.
So write me off, unable to stem your dissatisfaction:
Condemn the man you say
You’re setting free
