Down at the corner of Dearth and Main,
I saw a spectre wait again
For someone lost and gone before
Through love’s wide window or death’s dark door.
She comes there to stand in expectancy
And a feeling of pity comes over me
That the loyal dead know more of life
Than many a husband, many a wife,
But the wind sings the city to poisoned sleep,
And the heart that forgets still remembers deep,
For it’s only the good that can cause such pain,
When your down on the corner of Dearth
And Main
on this,
this day,
how long it’s been,
my heart explodes within my chest
for you,
you were my ground and sky,
the ling’ring scent I loved the best
but this I’ve dreaded,
low and long,
to see you once again and know
that you,
you were my everything,
that I held close and then
let go
He was so rapt in yesterday
He mortgaged his tomorrow,
The moments all collateral
Against which he could borrow
But found, apace, they’d slipped away,
Their fragile cords all severed —
For we must “now” while there’s a now,
Or else we’ll find
We nevered
Across the road in fields I went
To see a world I didn’t know;
And down a lonely winding road
I happened then to lately go
And saw you there out in the fields,
A vision clothed in loveliness;
I see you now, where e’er I am,
For it’s you on whom I obsess —
Across a hundred different farms
I drive until the day goes dark:
But it’s still you I always see
With every glint and every spark
Across the road in fields I went
My every waking minute spent
In searching for that magic place
Where I’ll no longer see
Your face
I always thought
If I’d the key
I’d open Door 13
Behind which
Lies the secret
Of the man I might have been
It’s up there
Lying somewhere
In the corner of my mind
The door
To some reality
That I could never find
The thrill of heart
I wanted
Out beyond this dull routine
The golden key
To show me
How to get past
Door 13

That test you took the other day –
The one you didn’t study for –
It turns out it was pass or fail
And now your life has flipped
And now it has to be this way
You closed and locked and burned that door
And every first and last detail
Of that abandoned script
That test you took the other day –
The one you really paid no mind –
It doesn’t matter anyway
It’s just a life you’ve left behind
the wind cries tonight
it knows what we’ve been doing
and does not approve
for mercy’s sake
we have to change our ways
we must give way
i love you
but you must know too
we should stop
right here
while we still can
right now
please
this last thing
please
