Ziena’s Paradox

The Xyst at the Stoa of Attalos.
The Xyst at the Stoa of Attalos.

Ziena had quit,
So tired, pained —
Days were endless,
Nights just lonely

Under a cloud
For years it rained —
Beguiling kisses
Making only

Xysts &

Vague gists

(no title)

this house has never said my name before
a name now ringing clearly in the air
i guess the haunting starts now that you’re gone
you took my heart, my soul, my life,
my beer

so i sit down to write my life away
gaslighted like poor ingrid in that film
the king of solipsism on his throne
an empty kitchen cupboard for
a realm

A Short History of Them

She was his favorite
Habit, maybe —
Hard to say

He was her surrogate
Plush toy, really —
Just for play

They thought they’d arrogate
Pleasures of the
Flesh and heart –

Left off, wondering
Why they both felt
So apart

Into the Valley

He went to see her
After many years

In the house in the valley
She and her late husband had built
Where they raised their children
Now grown and gone

Her house had a fragrance like apples
And they spoke of the sadness
Of her last few years
Over glasses of wine

And the intensity
Of her loneliness
Escaped from her, unwillingly
Like light under a doorway

And she asked him to stay
First with her words
And then
With her mouth
And her whole body

And she became
Not young
But eternal in the night
Timeless
Motion and softness
Strength and yielding

And the solitary house
By the base of the valley road
Sat green and silent
In the morning light

As he drove back to where he came from

As she turned in bed to catch another hour’s sleep

And Then

And then maybe this is me
Just a dying leafless tree
As the winter cold sets in
Blighted and beset by sin

Sin as separation from
All that could have should have come
Yet alone here on the plain
I alone erect in pain

Pain always my mind besetting
Leaves no chance of e’er forgetting
Sole discarded cold debris
And then maybe this

Is me

Paris View

The view is one of loveliness,
A moment there to borrow
And grow the debt that is a heart
Loaned out to some old sorrow.

Sometimes our life seems grey, indeed.
It’s empty, raw, and juiceless —
For much we owe, we can’t repay.
And much we own
Is useless
