Her Tears

He wishes he could spare her tears today.
But there is nothing, nobody who can;
For tears will out – they’ll always find a way,
To issue when they will, despite of plan

That she might have of putting on brave face.
He loves her with an old man father’s love,
Full wishing he her sorrows could erase,
But knowing what her tears are symptoms of

He does not try to do what can’t be done.
No comforting with words that are but lies,
No hopes that have no hope, no stories spun,
Just loving silence all the while she cries.

But if a bridge from his love could appear
She could walk to the moon and back from here

Heartbroken

The porpoise may become a shark,
If we don’t have our species right;
Because she loved him in the dark,
She thought she knew him in the light

She thought she knew; she felt so strong –
But love gone left is simply, wrong,
And hollow is the memory
That now is tinged with treachery

Too Young to Know

When you’re too young to know,
But old enough to feel,
The anger is too much,
And emptiness, too real.

When daddy’s angry voice
Is ringing off the ceiling,
‘s No wonder that so many
Of our boys give up
Feeling

If She Could…

If she could flee the way she feels
She would. But that is not a choice:
She sleeps but fitful, misses meals,
And can find neither mind nor voice

To outline all the emptiness
She’s known since he’s been gone:
And all that she has left to keep
Is just keep

On

Her Kiss

Her kiss was full with oleander
Poison soon meandering
It’s way down to destroy
The last festoon he kept
Of flowers full of love.

And as she shed her denim,
He, unknowing, filled with venom,
Just another boy
With whom she slept,
To punish him, and every man,
For what she’d missed

In love

fallen star

that night was made for wishing,
and so you used it well —
but what it was you hoped for,
you wouldn’t (at first) tell,

but soon i heard you speak his name.
this boy? well, he was every star,
except the one that fell inside
of clueless me, who’d also fallen

Can You Stop The Sunset?

Now, can you stop the sunset?
Can you control the hours?
Or is this just another thing
That’s far beyond your powers?

What’s real was once what hadn’t been,
What’s here is only now;
And though we hold on to its rays,
The sun escapes, somehow.

Now, can you stop the nightfall,
And keep at home the years?
Or is the now for us to see,
And then recall
Through tears?

Wheatgrass

She said, “Come meet me in the fields,
And I will give my love to you.”
He went and waited, with a heart,
But now, it’s understood —

That love is cruel when it’s not kind,
And power’s shown by giving pain,
And wheatgrass blows in empty fields
Where men give up on love
For good

The Truth in Makep

We drink, at times, the sweetened,
Other times, the bitter cup:
And truth is more than anything
Than our minds can dream up.

She was the truth in makeup, she
Was lies out in the grass —
A hundred kind of choices,
Each of them too good to pass —

She wrapped herself in denouement,
Then spread that on the winds,
An innocent on holiday,
Too practiced in her sins —

I was a tool. I was a fool.
A tool among the fools:
To play a game where only she
Knew any of the rules.

How many times, how many ways,
I knew the feeling hollow
Of what it is to trust someone
Who goes where you can’t follow.

She left one day without a word,
My heart and head felt battered,
To feel her wrapped around me seemed
The only thing that mattered —

But life can be a funny thing.
Our hearts are self-repairing,
Especially when they’re around
Someone whose gifts are caring.

The “truth in makeup” still exists.
She’s on my Facebook feed;
We both are older now,
We’ve lost some looks, we’ve lost some speed —

But all of us face grief, and pain.
And in the final summing,
There’s naught we should as kindly treat
As our mistakes

In loving
