Snapshot: On the Platform

She turned for just a moment, as a wheel
Was turning poorly; so, right then he thought
Perhaps she meant to stay – but she did not.
She firmly walked, unflinching, towards the train.

He had controlled her, for a time, but now,
She could not be cajoled, or bribed, or bought:
And he had lost – not someone, for he’d not
So much as ever known her as a “someone” –
But he had lost a toy (to him)

While she had gained
A life
