Drowning in the gray

I asked him why he’d lied;
He didn’t know,
But that, I understood —

I understood
The way I do the rain

The rain that comes in sheets
And droves,
Amid the summer waste —

“Waste all your days,
And you’ll regret the nights,”
He told me with a smile

A smile that meant
The opposite
Of what it typically means
For you and me

For you and me
Are drowning the in gray,
Are you and I —
