The Illusion of Innocence

Your ancestors survived
Not just because they lived,
But because they killed.
Your ancestors, and mine.

Of all human delusions
Few are more illustrative
Than our claims to innocence
On behalf of our forebears.

Or maybe their relative innocence
Compared to some other group
Who is still around
To speak for itself.

Our real guilt(s)
Concerns those
Who were not able to leave
Ancestors
