The Burgers and the Beer

The burgers and the beer were good,
And there were tunes, and dancing —
And as the night wore on, he found
That she was more entrancing

Just like she somehow saw in him
What wasn’t there before.
The tepid fire, kindled,
Lingered on for decades more

To marriage and to children
And then on, to their divorce.
The lives and paths so twisting
Started out in simple course —

The burgers and the beer were good,
The music, and the cheesecake —
But little did they know that they
Would lead to so much
Heartache
