Love, As It Was

[The poem was found on the back of the attached photo, which was taken in 1942.]

I worked alone so many years
And slept under the stars
With cattle, cause it’s what I do
I never went to bars

Because there was no one for me
Just life out on the range
But then you came and sat by me
And everything just changed

I love you like the prairie wind
I love you like the sun
I love you like the stars at night
Because you are the one

Who taught my tired voice to sing
I’ll love you all my life
And I’d call it a privilege
If you would be my wife
