across the way, the carnival,
with you in bright array —
a love enormous as the sky
above an autumn day
and side by side we walked along,
two lovers in their teens,
and music filled the sky with swings,
and laughing in-betweens
i saw your bright eyes catch the light
the last rays of the sun:
but now the picture fades away,
my life is almost done…
and old man in his eighties shuffles
slowly o’er the grass,
unnoticed by the younger folk
who he may hap to pass
and some things cannot be explained,
there’s no point asking why —
a man can live so long and still
feel love that will not
die
