where my mind goes

my eyes – they might look interested
in everything you’re saying;
my face might make you think that i
am giving careful weighing
to all that you’ve presented for
my lone consideration:
but face and mind are different,
though in collaboration —

where my mind goes is where she is,
that’s where it always goes;
i see her in the sunlight, feel
her pass as the wind blows —
i see her when i close my eyes,
as i last saw here there;
reclining on a bed at home,
a type of answered prayer —

my face – it will play tricks on you –
i know that’s what it does —
where my mind goes is where she is,
and where i wish
i was
