With age comes wisdom – so they say –
But dreams get crowded out by woes,
And ever faster, time just flows,
With aches, and one more bill to pay.
With age comes longing, unexpressed,
To live encumbered down no more,
To travel to some distant shore
And pass some hidden sort of test
That tells us we have made the grade;
That shows us life is not in vain;
For it’s worth all the strife and pain
To know a difference we have made.
With age comes silence. Long and still,
We sit beside the lonely lake,
And watch our daylight slowly break
As does our body,
