The Only Man

The day came when it all broke down –
That day will always come –
And he knew he must find another reason

For after all the centuries,
And days torn out of time –
There always flows into the lake, a season

The season of the missing leaves,
And branches bare and dying;
Alone and cold, and far from any eyes

The only man he’ll ever be
Will find his purpose missing:
And really, it should come as no surprise

For much is only temporary
That beclouds his vision,
So he’d known little call to feel alarm —

But he saw life’s true face, inside
The mirror he was facing:
The only man who’d ever done him
Harm
