But Then Time Broke

They walked out, into perfect winter day,
And felt in the energy within their cells;
They laughed, and played, in no uncertain way,
Air steamed with breath and distant oaken smells

The fires in each fireplace: their own –
The snow beneath their feet: a center aisle —
A Christmas trip, a gambol out in style,
With no more care than two lost leaves, windblown

But then time broke, and all of it was gone
And he was left to live, to carry on –
He held her once, she was his world and sky,
But then time broke
And there’s no knowing
Why
