E.R.

This was my home away from home
I went there oft to stay;
When I’d come to, we all would share
Banter and repartee

The doctors and the nurses there
They got to know me well:
It’s really quite a nice place for
The local
Branch
Of hell

A Man and His Meds

Phenytoin

For no seizures
I must daily
Take this little orange pill

For my mind
And for body
Will behave against my will

It’s a weakness
Long accepted
And due notice must I give:

My disease may
Not define me
But it dictates how I live

the years before…

the years before they were controlled
the seizures ripped away my mind;
depression left me passion-blind,
and to much further living, cold

i’d stay awake for three days straight,
then make that up by sleeping five;
on whim, might take a three-week drive,
and end up in some distant state

twas mania that carried me
depression, then, would fill my head
and i became a newlywed
for loneliness had married me
