Tree of Desire

[The photo is of the “Tree of Desire” sculpture, in Petrozavodsk, Russia. – Owen]

Nothing looks the way it is,
But everything’s as it should be;
Moments that you are not you,
You might just be a bit of me

Or I might be a bit of you.
I really do not know:
But I see longing everywhere,
Yes, everywhere I go.

Now, no one knows the way back home,
But few left leave their homes at all;
In the silence and the gloom
They sit, just past the narrow hall

That leads to where they really are.
I can but vaguely see:
Still, you’ll find longing everywhere,
Wherever you might be.

He’s tired of wrestling with his heart,
She’s stretched down to a wire;
The branches dark and bare upon
The black tree of desire

That people stare at every day.
They move, they stop, they go:
But they find longing everywhere,
As I’m sure that you know —
Yes, we find longing everywhere,
For that is how
We grow

Improvise!

Improvise

The joys of being random
Seem but known to very few:
For true improvisation is
A thing few people do

And yet, we’re born to do it.
It’s all buried in our past:
To make each moment different
From the next and from the last

Reaching

We’re always reaching: ever-higher,
    Ever-further, ever-longer;
Always moving on to something:
    Something bigger, faster, stronger —

Though we’re safe within our meanings,
And not far from our first leanings,
Still we search, in need of teaching:
Always stretching, grasping
Reaching

Quiet Garden

Within this quiet garden
I wait to hear a sound;
But there is no one coming,
There’s no one else around

The flowers are so lovely,
The trees are lush and downy,
There is no finer garden
Anywhere in this whole county

And although days like this are rare,
The rarest thing of any,
Is why we keep things to ourselves
When we are blessed
With plenty

Selfishness 101

We need no classes teaching us
To justify our selfishness.
A thing we know instinctively;
And do, without reluctancy.

We’ll think up reasons later why
That no one else should ever quail,
For what we want is always good
Because we want it. End of tale.
