Remedial Living

A profound thought occurred to me,
Although it’s a tautology,
And that’s that we will always be
Just what we are: humanity —

The arguments that we’re drawn in
Of sex or sect, of class or skin
Are such that we can never win
And really, what they’ve always been:

Excuses. With our eyes turned out,
We void humility and doubt
That late, could help us turn about
And start a loving plant to sprout —

Because we’re human, we can be
So many things, but we are free
To stretch our moral paucity
With faith and hope and charity

The Once Again

The once again that always was,
The pattern of our wishes;
The banquet set upon a hill
That’s made from loaves and fishes

The once again that needs to be,
The secret we must mention —
That love provides because it’s right,
And not to please convention

Stalwart

The one remains who will not go,
Who will not leave, who will not die;
The only, lonely, stubborn one
Who stands beneath a fading sky

But still maintains a stalwart faith
That everything can be okay —
The one who still believes in you,
And will not
Will not
Go
Away
