We can enjoy each others’ failures,
That’s called schadenfreude;
A weakness that we’re all prone to
And cannot avoid(-uh)
When people hate you for your faults,
It can be understood:
We like to think we hate what’s bad
And respect what is good
But often we are hated
For the things that we do well:
Some of this is envy, but
The rest is hard to tell
There is no word for this, so I
Call it odiobonum
It is from Latin: “to hate good”
And it seems apropos(-num)
For when odiobonum is
Aimed at us, we find:
That to be hated for our strengths
Just messes with
One’s mind
(… prompted …)
Note: This is a rework of a post I wrote years ago in prose.
