History is disturbing if
You read it trying to understand
And not to glorify or judge
Scientific rationales are
Everywhere among the acts
Most heinous and nefarious
Because our knowledge is, at best,
Both tenuous and, often wrong —
Yet those worship science will not see
Because technology, they think,
Makes them the wisest of who’ve lived,
As though mere power ever makes us wise
Eugenics was “scientific” once:
It’s legacy of torture and of corpses
Has taught us nothing about right or wrong
Or how little “science” has to do
With either
