Scenes from Home – 2

I eat each day;
The food comes packaged somehow,
But I rarely think much about
How it came to be there.
We pay as little as we can for food,
But all recently found out that
This thing we take for granted
Is ‘essential’.

A million shows about cooking,
Far fewer about farming, or ranching,
Even fewer about transporting food —
Because we love celebrities so much,
We grow them everywhere.

There’s little so passé
As silos and railroad freight cars,
But I’m able pay what I pay
To eat what I eat
Because of the people who work here.

For it is still hard work
That makes
The world work
