When Winter Was a Distant Thing

When winter was a distant thing
We thought that we were ready;
Until the blasts of cold came in
And made each step unsteady

We slip our way along, up to
The far top of the hill:
And see that we’d forgotten
What it felt like in the chill

What, far away, we think we recognize
Becomes a stranger up close
To our eyes
