the breathing sea

the breathing sea,
it comes, it goes
as you and me,
and all of us, in turn
are inhalations, vapors, spray:
who make our way
to shore one day
as steadily the sun will burn
and watching sand is moved by toes
beside the breathing sea —
humanity

the world is riddled through,
and we
must scale the heights and scan the dune
as it will all be over soon;
that much is only true,
both me and you —
just time to sing a joyless tune,
or happy one, if such we be:
to breathe our songs with energy
in succor and in harmony
within the balance we eschew
beside the breathing sea
