The Only Tree

The only tree around for miles
Stands, where it has always stood;
It knows no category, nor
Subjective words like “bad” or “good” –

For far from company, there’s just
The grass, the clouds, the wind, the rain —
And all that years of roots can reach
Of water, soil, sun, and pain –

The tree, my elder kin, still stands.
It is the only tree around:
It’s rooted to where it belongs,
And to be seen, it must be found –

Although we know that many trees
Nobody ever finds at all;
They stand until the silent day
That they give way, at last
And finally
Fall
