In all the moments fraught with chance,
I heard the music as it played;
I wish just once I could have danced,
But I was always
Too
Afraid

sometimes pure torture
Dancing? Not dancing?
Dancing was the easiest part of the ritual for girls, and the most dreaded for the boys.
The hardest part for the girls seemed to be trying not to laugh if I approached them.
That’s some pure torture right there.
I took revenge on them at age fourteen by… being unhappy.
Yeah, that’ll get ’em.
Not being asked to dance was a passive rejection for girls. But nothing compared to the aggressive rejection of being turned down for boys.
They often do, these days.
