I guess ultimately we can’t control our readers fully. David Lynch does a great job of letting his work speak for itself, in the face of feverish theorising.
Fully, or at all.
I’d say we have a fair measure of control through our skill as writers.
It’s the same thing with humor. It goes over some people’s heads and then I’m sad.
