Here’s What I Don’t Understand

Here is what I know:
That you were here,
And now you’re very gone,
And other people seem
Like light and shadow
Rippling in the dark;
Like ghosts and fancies
Dancing all around

Here’s what I forgot to say:
You were a minor sort
Of everything;
A major part of me,
A kind of keynote
To my destiny,
A break along the way —
A love intense, but
I forgot to say

Here’s what I don’t understand:
Why does the summer break into
Prismatic patterns overhead?
I wish I understood —
But I do not,
Nor am I likely to;
Among the rippling lights
A major/minor thing
I should have said,
That keeps on ringing,

Ringing,

In my head
