The Windmill Tilting of Poetry and Blogging

[Originally entitled “Queue and — Eh?” and written after a weekend full of posting, on my birthday, back in 2016. – Owen]

So why write so much poetry?
I’m sure that we don’t need it –
The leading feature of that stuff
Is more folks write than read it.

I’ve answered this before, of course.
Our language is bereft:
But strip it of the meaningless,
And poetry’s what’s left.

So how much time this weekend will
You spend on writing stuff?
A poem every hour seems
Like miles past enough.

I’d venture saying that you’re right.
But still, I’ll persevere:
It is my birthday, after all,
Let’s mark another year.

I think a blog’s supposed to be
A journalistic thing;
Why don’t you write in that way, and
To ‘issues’ your words bring?

When folks know you’re political,
Then half will just stop hearing.
But what is more uncommon,
People might see without jeering,
Or hectoring, or other things
You find in most debates:
For art should not build fences
It should find us all
More gates

      1. Happy birthday! Also:

But strip it of the meaningless,
        And poetry’s what’s left.

I love this. This is why some days poems instead of prose fall out of my fingertips: all the rules and regulations just detract from what really begs to be said.
