The lake lay stilling in the mist,
The morning of our youth and soul;
And in that moment staid, we kissed –
A love that marked our lost control –

The mist, the lake, they still are here,
As I grow old and dreams go dark:
But you’re beside a mountain fire
And none suspect the matriarch

Had once a different love than now,
Somewhere in heart’s compartments hid.
The world was misty then, and young –
And love was just a thing we felt
And did
