Of Dignity

Of dignity, with ardor long he spoke:
The birthright of each woman and each man —
Then cursed the waitress who his plate just broke,
Because a boy had tripped her as he ran.

He damned the parents of the little child,
(The boy was looking stricken by it all)
He wanted his meal free; and he reviled
The whole restaurant for casting such a pall

Upon his great discussion at the time.
These people didn’t know, then, who he was:
A famous champion of human rights,
A leader in a high-and-mighty cause —

Yes, “dignity” – his name’s a synonym —
But it’s all theoretical with him
