I’ve never been a handsome man,
I am not much to see;
And often, there’ve been few who wanted
Much to do with me

I know what being poor’s about
For I have been a debtor;
And I’ve seen someone who I loved
Just leave for someone better

I know the helplessness that comes
When kids you try to raise;
When trite solutions do not work
And life is set ablaze

By choices I made carelessly.
I know all this, but yet:
I also know that life is good
And try not to forget

The clock is running, all time,
The moments we’re assigned —
And that the gold we’re given’s mixed
And has to be
