One Event Year, So Far

I think that I can see the way
From here is mostly down;
And that’s because, last Saturday
My grandson didn’t drown

He tried to, ’cause he’s two, you see
And that’s just what they do:
They throw themselves at danger, since
They haven’t got a clue

I’m standing there, I seem him fall
And I jump in the pool;
I pick him up, he looks at me, like
“Wow. That was uncool.”

I took him to his grandmother,
He seemed to be alright;
He made through his birthday, then
Mostly unscathed, despite

His best attempts at being two.
His life is largely feral:
We try to celebrate these kids
But it’s
At their own
Peril
